Two seconds in a post room, and a person sorts your letter into personal or marketing. Design Studio exists to win those two seconds.
People spend a fortnight on the offer inside and no thought at all on the thing that decides whether anybody opens it. In a company of any size, your envelope is looked at for about two seconds by somebody deciding which pile it belongs in. That is the entire competition.
The mistake to avoid. Do not write Private and Confidential on marketing mail. It reads as an attempt to bypass normal handling and whoever opens it knows exactly what you did. One delivery, at the cost of the impression you were trying to make.
Because none of the above is difficult, and almost nobody does it consistently. Doing it the same way on every send, at a volume no person could sustain by hand, is the entire value. The full walkthrough of what happens to an envelope between the postbox and the desk is here, and it is the most useful thing on this website if you are new to post.
